Cougars still in the hunt
the running to qualify for the Dudley Eve Trophy -- but they could put themselves in a position to do exactly that if they defeat Wolves in their Premier Division battle at Devonshire Rec. tonight (9.00 p.m. kick-off).
Cougars are among a batch of seven teams fighting for four Trophy places, with only league leaders North Village certain of a berth.
With two games each remaining before the cut-off, Village have 13 points at the top, PHC have 10, Devonshire Colts eight and Wolves, Dandy Town and Cougars all have six.
Somerset with four points are outsiders but if results go their way they also could still make the shake-up. Only bottom-placed Southampton are out of the reckoning.
Cougars, however, will be hard pressed to take maximum points as they enter tonight's contest without big goalkeeper Tori Henry who had to seek hospital attention yesterday after injuring his shoulder during their stunning 3-2 victory over the Zebras on Sunday.
In addition to that injury, which could keep him out of action for quite a few games, Henry also hurt his leg and was limping when he left hospital.
Young Ricardo Brangman will probably be given the starting role between the sticks, but Henry feels that whoever fills his shoes will be capable of doing a good job for Cougars and help them in their bid for cup qualification.
"That was a good victory for us against PHC on Sunday, now we are going for a Dudley Eve place that's for sure,'' he said of his team who were only promoted from the First Division at the start of the season.
Skipper and centre-back Shawn Smith, who headed home the late winner on Sunday, is just as fired up and shares the big keeper's view.
"Beating the Zebras was a good win for us, we knew it was vital to get maximum points especially at this time of the season,'' he said. Like Cougars and Wolves, Dandy Town also see midweek action, but their clash with North Village, originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved to Thursday with a 9.00 p.m. kick-off at St John's Field.
Village will be looking to consolidate their lead at the top which they achieved thanks to a 1-0 victory over Rangers at the weekend.
Tonight's other Premier Division games see Zebras playing Colts at Somerset CC at 7.00 and Somerset Trojans taking on Rangers at the same venue at 9.00.
While Cougars enter the game on a high they will obviously be hoping to catch Wolves on a low after they went down 2-1 to Trojans on Friday night.
Coach Dennis Brown is known for his ability to inspire players and the odds are that he will have set a fire under Wolves in the hope they rebound from their shock defeat.
North Village Rams take on BAA Wanderers tomorrow night in a rescheduled Commercial League encounter at BAA. The match was postponed on Saturday due to heavy rain, but will kick off tonight at 7.00.
