Island soccer players discuss unionisation

On the eve of the new football season, another move is underway to set up a local players' association.

A meeting is scheduled for Warwick Workmen's Club next Monday night to determine whether there is sufficient support to proceed with the Bermuda United Football Players Association.

"This is your chance to organise yourself so that you can have an association that will represent you in the affairs of football in Bermuda,'' reads a flyer being circulated among players.

A group of about ten people, eight former and current players and two women involved in football on the management level, have been discussing setting up a players' association for about a year.

"Our main concern is the players having some type of representation in the clubs as well as in dealing with the Bermuda Football Association,'' said one of the group members, a former Bermuda international, who asked not to be named.

He stressed that it is the association's intention to work with the clubs and the BFA.

"The association is here to work with the clubs and the BFA, not against them,'' he insisted. "We don't want to be looked at as an enemy to anybody.'' The association hopes to help to educate players on the history of their clubs, achievements of former players and the rules of various competitions.

"We want to teach the present players about the past players because a lot of players don't even know who I am, or who `Gumbo' Bean is,'' said the spokesman. "We're looking to better football all round, not just the game itself but also to educate the players off the field as well.'' Response from players, both past and present, will be guaged at Monday's meeting. Previous attempts at forming a players union, the latest more than a year ago, have never really got off the ground.

Other aims and objectives of the Association are: To obtain and maintain proper representation of all players and generally to protect and advance the interest of its members.

To ensure that all players receive fair and equal treatment.

To provide literature which would be of interest to the members and further their football development.

To support the work or purpose of any other association or person(s) whose aims and objectives are in accord with those of this Union.

To provide opportunities for social interaction among the players.

To educate members on the history of football in Bermuda and to keep them abreast of changes in the game.
