Horton's Trojans face end-of-season scramble

"I'll promise you we won't be going back to the Second Division!'' Those confident words could come back to haunt Somerset Trojans coach Randy Horton just six months after they were uttered.

The Trojans, relegated for the first time two years ago, were hauled back into the First Division by Horton last season.

And they started the new campaign confidently by taking seven points from their first three matches, briefly holding down top spot.

But a string of poor results quickly saw the west enders slide down the table and now they face the threat of relegation yet again.

The First Division's fight for survival is turning out to be one of the most interesting ever as, with just two games remaining, both places are still up for grabs. And like a hot potato, nobody wants to touch them.

While relegation remains an issue of uncertainty, one thing is certain... the four teams involved in the fight can help their own cause by winning their last two games.

With only two points separating Hotels and Somerset from bottom team PHC, with Devonshire Cougars lodged in between, the question of who will replace Wolves and Hamilton Parish in the Second Division next season may not be answered until the last kick of the league season on March 29.

After a break for this weekend's FA Cup semi-final between Vasco and North Village, the dogfight resumes the following weekend.

One interesting factor is that newly crowned league champions, Vasco, could have a say in who goes down as they have to meet both the Trojans and Cougars.

There won't be any favours from the champions because they have one, possibly two, end of season finals to prepare for.

PHC, who were relegated for the only time in their history back in 1979-80, are looking the most likely candidates for the drop.

After blowing the chance of victory against Hotels on Sunday, they now face must-win situations in their last two games against Dandy Town and Southampton Rangers.

In the case of a tie at the bottom, goal difference will come into play.

Hotels have a difference of minus-nine, Somerset and PHC minus-11 and Cougars minus-19.

Hotels have to meet Boulevard and Devonshire Colts while Cougars close out their season against Colts and Vasco.

RANDY HORTON -- his early season promise might not be fulfilled as Somerset fight for First Division survival.
