More females in private schools
except Government ones, recently released statistics show.
The chapter on education in the Bermuda Digest of Statistics for 1999 shows that in 1998 a total of 10,592 students were enrolled in Government and private schools and the Bermuda College.
Of this figure, 5,133 were male and 5,459 were female.
This female dominance extends over the past ten years with 1993 being the only year during that period when there were more male students enrolled (5,128) than female (5,125).
A breakdown of the total figure for 1998 by the three school categories shows that of the 6,701 students in Government schools, 3,443 were male and 3,258 were female.
Meanwhile there were 3,214 students in the private schools with 1,456 being male students and 1,758 female.
And at the college level, there were 677 students enrolled. Two hundred and thirty four of these were male and 443 were female.
Other information in the education section of the statistics booklet shows that the Hotel and Business Administration Department of the Bermuda College has been the most popular area for enrolment since 1997.
That year 295 students enrolled in that department as opposed to the 234 who enrolled in the Arts and Science Department. In 1998, 339 students enrolled in Hotel and Business Administration while 249 went to Arts and Science.
From 1989 to 1996, Arts and Science ruled the roost and had the heaviest enrolment.
