Hubbard, Hedges impress
together in a major stage race in the US on the weekend -- albeit in different classifications.
The 39th annual Longsjo Classic in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, featured most of the US pro riders and the four-day stage race was eventually won by Frank McCormack of Saturn.
However, Hubbard's team-mate with the New Jersey-based Navigators, Trent Klasna, finished second, with Hubbard playing an important supporting role for his team leader.
Hubbard, preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia this September, had a strong 12.9-mile time trial on the first day and a lead-pack finish in the 77.5-mile circuit race on day two. He showed his climbing ability on day three, when he and team-mate Skip Spangenburgh were part of a breakaway on a tough, mountainous 103-mile road race.
They stayed in front until the last couple of miles, when they were caught by the pack, including Klasna. In the final 49.5-mile stage, Hubbard again finished in the lead group on a fast technical criterium, which saw Canadian champion Czeslaw Lukascewicz take the honours.
"It was very good race for me,'' said Hubbard. "Obviously, I am having to support Trent, as he is our top rider, and I'm more than happy with my performance and form at the moment. The team is riding very well.'' Hubbard, McCormack and Lukascewicz all rode in the Bermuda Grand Prix this past spring.
Hedges, coming off wins in the National Time Trial and Road Race championships last month, continued his impressive form.
An 18-year-old student in the US, Hedges finished 12th in the first day's time trial, despite bike problems. He bounced back on day two for his NESCA team, with a top ten finish in the 25-mile circuit race, just eight seconds behind the winner.
It was on the hilly stage three 47-mile road race that Hedges had his best ride, when he finished alone in second place, five seconds behind winner William Skinner and one place ahead of American Jon Retset, who won the junior division of the Bermuda Grand Prix.
On the final day, a 15-mile criterium, Hedges finished with the lead pack, with Retset taking honours. Hedges, who is preparing for the CAC Games in Venezuela, finished seventh overall on general classification.
