Fitted dinghies fight to the finish
on the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's race committee.
Only one race was sailed as a result of the dramatic swings in the breeze. And all the syndicates agreed to make up the second race at the next venue to be hosted by the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club.
The gloves came off early in the current battle for first in the overall standings.
Port Royal tacked on Contest at the start of the second weather leg. Perhaps some of Port Royal's aggressive tactics could be attributed in part to their `celebrity' guest crew, although it should also be said that Peter Bromby was not his vocal self on the day.
The two boats only split tacks when Challenger , which was leading at this point, forced Port Royal to tack back over to the left.
The race was still quite close at this time, with only Victory struggling to make up lost ground after filling with water.
As the boats converged on the weather mark, Port Royal again showed her experience, taking quick advantage of a lapse in concentration by Contest and forcing her away from the mark.
Challenger's lead had shrunk and she was now clearly in peril of being overtaken as Port Royal steamed in. The crew of Contest , opting for their big spinnaker, were also very close behind, with Elizabeth following. The boats were all stacked up as they approached the leeward mark.
A quick jibe by Challenger proved disastrous. She filled with water and sank at the stake boat.
Port Royal broke from the pack after that, leaving Contest to fend off Elizabeth's challenge for second place.
Elizabeth could only finish third, while Victory , after again threatening to go to the bottom, finished a distant fourth.
