Town's new lights help ease schedule backlog
Just as Bermuda Football Association resigned themselves to losing PHC Stadium for night matches this season has come confirmation that St. John's Field will soon host floodlit games for the first time.
A list of rescheduled matches sent out by the BFA yesterday showed that night games arranged for PHC Stadium for the rest of the season have been turned into day games because of continuing light problems that have plagued the ground since last March.
However, on Friday, January 23, a new night venue will be added to the BFA's list when Dandy Town host their first match under lights, taking on Hotels in a league game.
"The BFA are absolutely delighted that St. John's Field is available for night matches,'' said BFA general secretary David Sabir yesterday.
"Obviously, for the other night field operators who are beginning to feel some of the strain of having to continually deal with rescheduled matches, this will come as a relief.
"We wish Western Stars all the best and we're hopeful football can now be showcased in another location and that it will be positive to the community.'' The lights at PHC Stadium have not proved reliable since late last season and the club are still weighing the cost of replacing the whole system against repairing the present lights.
"There still has been no further indication that their lights will be available to football for the rest of the season,'' added Sabir.
"And again, the ability to reschedule matches at another location will certainly alleviate some of the burden administratively that we are experiencing in this regard.
"Based on the original notification, PHC will advise us in due course if and when their lights will be available. We have a handle on the schedule in regards to matches scheduled for PHC at night.'' Meanwhile, last night's First Division match between Devonshire Colts and Southampton Rangers was again postponed because of a Referees' Association meeting and will now take place tonight at BAA Field.
Despite the number of recent postponements, Sabir insisted the backlog of matches was not unusual.
"We've had seasons where it has been worse than this, we're not in a desperate situation,'' Sabir said.
The FA Cup matches, which were hit by bad weather on December 14, have been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 28 when double-headers will be held at Devonshire Rec, Somerset, and BAA Field.
Dandy Town versus St. David's and Prospect against Devonshire Cougars will be played at Devonshire Rec., North Village will meet St. George's and the Trojans will host Boulevard at Somerset while at BAA Field, Vasco will take on Hotels and PHC will meet Devonshire Colts.
Tomorrow night's scheduled Friendship and Shield matches at BAA Field have been put back to next Wednesday. Paget will meet St. David's in the Shield and Vasco will take on Somerset in the Friendship.
Action continues this week on Friday at Devonshire Rec. where Devonshire Cougars play Somerset and Wolves take on Hamilton Parish in First and Second Division matches.
Those games have been brought forward from Saturday.
CORRECTION: It was incorrectly stated in yesterday's report on the Vasco v Dandy Town First Division game that Paul Towlson had conceded the penalty which allowed Town to score their equaliser. Derek Stapley, in fact, was responsible for the foul which led to the penalty.
