PTA president calls for St. George's shake-up

the 21st century.

They should include Government putting heavy pressure on Club Med to open their business or sell it.

That's the view of Mr. C. Ross Smith, president of both St. George's Secondary School PTA and Bermuda Technical Institute Old Boys Alumnae.

Mr. Smith told Pembroke Rotary Club that the future for St. George's was not clear or assured.

"It will call for innovative, forward thinking, cooperative methods to be employed to increase its revenue base, reduce its operating expenses and create an atmosphere for progressive change while maintaining the essence and cultural charm of the town.'' Mr. Smith said the town's corporation should urge Government to repeal the lease of the old senior training school property from St. George's Club.

The property could then be leased by the corporation for use as a multi-level car park.

"This would provide much needed decentralised parking space in St.

George's,'' said Mr. Smith.

He added Government should also increase its subsidy to St. George's Fire Brigade to about $500,000.

And the brigade should be re-sited at the northern side of Penno's Wharf in a new purpose-built property, he said.

Moves to re-site the brigade at the western end of the Airport ought to be resisted.

Another idea, said Mr. Smith, was for Government to be petitioned to boost the corporation's revenue from the Airport, and oil docks.

And he continued by calling for improved promotion of the town's history and culture.

"All of the above could assist in increasing the revenue base of the corporation and providing the foundation for the corporation to launch itself as a self-supporting municipality into the 21st century.''
