Mills' work on show
Mills, one of 40 paintings currently on show at the Bermuda Society of Arts' Harbour Gallery on Pitts Bay Road.
Mr. Mills, who previously had a one-man show at Heritage House in 1993, has included a selection of Bermudian, New England and English scenes in this latest exhibition.
An architect by profession, he says he enjoys painting Bermuda's unique architecture -- but also devotes a lot of time to maritime art. In this show, there are traditional Thames barges, and Brixham trawlers besides Bermuda's Fitted Dinghies.
"I think my work has become softer since my last show,'' says Mr. Mills, who trained as an architect at Plymouth School of Art in Devon, England, and worked for six years as senior architect for the Bermuda Government.
During previous employment in Zambia and Kenya, he developed an interest in theatre design and set painting. Since he has been in Bermuda, Mr. Mills has designed some 30 sets, but is best known for his designs for the annual BMDS Christmas pantomime.
Mr. Mills, who says he has "dabbled for years'' with watercolours, has only recently devoted his full time to painting. He feels that he is most influenced by English artist Roland Hilder, both in his architectural and maritime paintings.
This show is the latest by the Bermuda Society of Arts' new Harbour Gallery.
With a members' group show entitled `Harbour Views' opening on May 12, future featured artists will include Diana Tetlow in June, and Tracy Williams in July.
IN THE SHOW -- "Net Mending at Riddell's Bay''.
