Lemay seeks legal advice on pyramid schemes

responding to allegations that some of his officers are entangled in illegal pyramid schemes.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett said the Commissioner was taking advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and a statement would be forthcoming sometime today.

An article in yesterday's Royal Gazette revealed several illegal pyramid schemes are operating on the Island, prompting many residents to call The Royal Gazette and cast an accusing finger at Police involvement.

One man said that officers invited him to presentations they were making at the Police Recreation Club (PRC) last week while another questioned how Police could be expected to uphold such a law "when they are running their own boards themselves''.

The article noted that the commercial crime unit of the Police service were "maintaining an active interest'' in the schemes which promise big profits to participants.

Mrs. James Barnett could not confirm presentations were made in the PRC and noted that according to her information, no one had reserved the hall for that purpose last week.

Three schemes which are sweeping through the Island require participants to put down $500, $2,000 or $6,000 with expected returns of $4,000, $16,000, and $48,000 respectively.
