It is understood the youngster was ordered off the bus for rowdy behaviour -- but jumped up and grabbed a window as the bus moved away.

Last night it was unclear whether the teenager was trying to reboard the bus through a window when he fell.

A spokeswoman at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night said the youngster was still being treated in the casualty unit. She added the boy was likely to be detained overnight. But it is understood the child's injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. as the bus travelled along Harbour Road, Paget, near Aberfeldy Nursery.

Public Transportation Board boss Herman Basden said: "The kid was put off the bus for very disruptive behaviour.

"He seems to have clung on to the outside -- the driver didn't know he was there and he fell off.

"It seems to be a very odd thing to do and very dangerous and no blame has been attached to the driver.'' The incident is the latest chapter in a run of hooliganism and vandalism on the buses.

Earlier this month, bus drivers went public with their fears for their safety -- and that of their passengers.

In one incident, a large glass marble was hurled through an open bus window -- the same bus had been hit by eggs only a day before. And around $2,000 worth of damage was caused to another PTB vehicle in Bailey's Bay by school-age rowdies.

Missiles have also been thrown at buses on Spring Benny Road, Sandys, and on Middle Road, Southampton.

One bus, also travelling in the Bailey's Bay area, had its windscreen smashed.

Egg-throwing vandals have also smashed a brand-new bus's window and a St.

David's-bound bus has been pelted with eggs and oranges.

Mr. Basden said: "Young people have to realise that when they do things like misbehave -- we have even had cases of children jumping off moving buses -- it's very dangerous and they could do themselves very serious injury.''
