We need to maintain our old traditions
Happy Easter, Family! We stand on the eve of the day on which our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, gave his life and suffered the ultimate penalty, death, for our sins, so that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Then on the third day he rose again. There is a message for us in His resurrection. We all sin and make mistakes, but we can recover from that, point our lives in a more positive direction, correct our errors, improve ourselves and try to live more Christ-like lives.
Of course we celebrate Good Friday and Easter in other ways as well, by eating fish cakes and hot cross buns, which we should and I look forward to eating plenty of both, but let us not lose sight of the real meaning of Easter. More on this after the Top 20.
Making the jump to the top of the hits is Snoop Dogg's latest rap anthem, I Wanna Rock, one of the baddest rap tracks produced in the past year. Tumbling to #2 is How Low by Ludacris, a solid and consistent star in the rap game. Up to #3 is Why Don't You Love Me by Beyonce. Falling to #4 is Say Aah by Trey Songz featuring Fabolous.
Leaping to #5 is Hard by Rihanna, the Bajan Bombshell. Rihanna's star has gone off the charts. She's not exactly Beyonce, but who is? She has clawed out a unique yet marketable niche, and people just love her. It doesn't hurt that she does have some hot beats. I'm thinking that Jay Z has something to do with that.
On the way up at #6 it's Bedrock by Young Money featuring Lloyd. Slipping to #7 is It Kills Me by Melanie Fiona, a sweet and touching love song. Down to #8 is Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart by the amazing Alicia Keys.
Up to #9 is Sexy Chick by David Guetta featuring Akon, a monster house jam. This one is both catchy and pulsating. Jumping to #10 is Tik Tok by Ke$ha. Slipping to #11 is Sex Therapy by Robin Thicke.
At #12 is She Wolf by Shakira, a kickin' dance track. Holding at #13 is On To The Next One by Jay Z and Swizz Beats.
Rude Boy by Rihanna, advances to #14. We spoke about Rihanna, her success and popularity earlier. No need to repeat it. She rocks. Falling to #15 is I Invented Sex by Trey Songz featuring Drake.
Improving to #16 is Everything To Me by Monica, last week's essential new tune. Up to #17 is Say Something by Timbaland featuring Drake, this week's essential new tune. Down two spots to #18 is We Are The World, by Artists for Haiti. As I predicted, Haiti has fallen off the radar somewhat and I implore us to not forget about our Haitian brothers and sisters and give wherever and whenever we can. At the same time, let us remember that charity begins at home and we have many homeless people here in Bermuda who could use our help as well.
Improving to #19 is Hey Daddy, (Daddy's Home) by Usher featuring Plies. Tumbling to #20 is Empire State of Mind by Jay Z and Alicia Keys.
Now back to this week's word – celebrating and remembering the real meaning of Easter! I hope to see so many kites this week that we can barely see the sky. I hope to see kite fights and kites going down.
I also hope that we have many family and community events which cause families to get together in larger numbers than they do on a daily and weekly basis. This will mean that we are building stronger families, which is what is needed in our crime, drug, gang infested and shoot 'em up country.
This will also mean that we are maintaining our traditions, our history, our culture, our heritage. People often ask what does it mean to be Bermudian. What is Bermudian heritage, culture, etc?
We have a duty to our young people to force our heritage, culture and traditions upon them, by simply living it every day and at every opportunity. For instance, last week Sunday I was at Ice Queen buying lunch for my family. I thought "how ridiculous is this?" So I asked a similarly aged (in her 40s) woman also there, two simple questions:
1. Doesn't anybody cook Sunday dinner any more?
2. Did our parents ever take us to Ice Queen for Sunday lunch?
The answer to both questions in many cases is "No". I can tell you that my parents had Sunday lunch and dinner home cooked every weekend. My parents never took me to a fast food place for a Sunday lunch or dinner. Oh how we have changed! Granted I had actually already prepared something for dinner later, but the point remains, our parents never treated us like that; it was home cooked meals 99 percent of the time. The other side of the argument, to be fair, is that there were no fast food places open on Sundays back then either, but I digress and lose the point if I delve too far into that scenario. We have to get back to our roots. That is one simple tradition but there are many more.
In any event, let's all have a safe, crime free and shooting free Easter Holiday, spent with family and friends, enjoying traditions in peace, harmony and love. Remember the will and the way of God, which is to love thy neighbour as He loves us. Peace ... DJLT.
