Inmate attacks top prison officer

Deputy Commissioner Marvin Trott revealed that he was attacked by a prisoner at the Westgate Correctional Facility."I was assaulted by an inmate who was very quickly and appropriately restrained.

Royal Gazette learned yesterday.

Deputy Commissioner Marvin Trott revealed that he was attacked by a prisoner at the Westgate Correctional Facility.

"I was assaulted by an inmate who was very quickly and appropriately restrained. The inmate will be dealt with through the Magistrates' Court in due time.'' Mr. Trott refused to discuss details of the assault but did report: "It was simply a sneaky, unprovoked attack from the back.'' He also moved to shoot down television reports that the attack was linked to a sit-in by remand inmates last week.

"My assault was in no way, shape or form, linked with the sit-in. It was a completely separate, independent action by a singular inmate.'' The sit-in last week by remand inmates protesting the re-introduction of specific rules at the prison prompted an anonymous prison officer to contact The Royal Gazette .

He said he was very concerned that prison officers were not trained to deal with dangers associated with the job.

But Mr. Trott said: "There is always a need for more training but the prison staff are appropriately trained and are in a position to respond to emergency situations.''
