Four-man karate team confirmed for Pan-Ams
Pan-American Games as a result of the withdrawal of Gladwin (Roots) Phillips late last week.
Bermuda Martial Arts Society (BMAS) president Dwayne Williams yesterday confirmed that there would be no additions to the current line-up, which includes Nigel Williams, Eugene Ford, Roger Trimm and Bobby Smith.
Williams and the BMAS came under heavy fire last week from Phillips and top local instructor Skipper Ingham regarding the team chosen as well as the overall selection process.
It was alleged by both that Ingham, as a member of the BMAS technical committee, had not been allowed to participate in the picking of the team which made the whole process null and void.
The pair recommended that the criteria for selection be amended in order that the best team be chosen to represent Bermuda and that all karate factions be allowed to have a voice.
Ingham further stated that the actual team was sub-standard and that other more credible and experienced fighters from his Bermuda Karate Institute had been deliberately overlooked.
"The team sucks,'' were Ingham's words when asked his opinion of the original squad. "Only one of those guys should be on the team besides Roots and that's Bobby Smith.'' Although Bermuda Olympic Association president Austin Woods gave the criteria for selection by the BMAS a vote of confidence, Williams has thus far avoided getting into a mudslinging match and yesterday gave terse one-word answers to questions posed by The Royal Gazette .
