For his 43-year-old nephew is eyeing up the constituency as a possible launch pad for his "new world order'' campaign. "My seat is safe wherever I stand,'' warned Mr. Smith, who calls himself "High Priest'' Mohatma Shiloh Mahdi.

But political veteran Mr. Woolridge has no intentions of allowing his oldest sister Louise's third son to scupper his election chances.

Blood is thicker than water -- except in the cut-throat business of politics! "If my nephew feels he can make a contribution to the Country, good luck to him. It is a free Country,'' said an unabashed Mr. Woolridge.

Of course, he was speaking with the confidence of a man who romped home to victory with 36.2 percent of the vote at the 1989 election. And he sounded a warning to his nephew: "I won't be giving up my seat to anyone, not even to him.'' A potential family dust-up may have political pundits salivating, but it could be other stalwarts who should worry for their seats. For Mr. Smith, of Knapton Hill, Smith's, has not ruled out standing elsewhere.

He is about to go door-knocking to test the political waters in every constituency.

And whichever constituency gives him the warmest welcome, the sitting MP will be served notice.

"I will conduct a poll to see what the reaction is,'' he said.

Mr. Smith has already become a community activist through his Young Progressives group.

And one of the constituencies he has focussed on has been the territory of his `Uncle Jim'.
