US issuesY2K bug warning for Bermuda
Bermuda.
The new "Consular Information sheet'' was released on Tuesday and carries a caution for citizens who are intending to travel or be in the Island around the New Year.
Although the report states that there is a low risk of potential Y2K problems, it has flagged the Island's reliance on computer systems as an area of possible concern.
But US acting Consul General Douglas Dobson said the warning had the lowest ranking amongst countries worldwide covered by the reports.
"That is our best characterisation, the most favourable,'' he said. "In the sense that other countries are the least favourable, like nations in the former Soviet Union, where there will be problems.'' The information sheet states that "Bermuda is heavily reliant on computerised systems'', with its twin economy pillars of international business and tourism "heavily dependent on technology''.
But it adds that the Island is working with other jurisdictions to minimise any potential impact and appears "to be well prepared to handle any problems created as a result of Y2K''.
Mr. Dobson said the caution was made after consultations with the Bermuda Government.
