Curry avoids the upset

tournament organisers and opponents alike, one should still give consolation to Graham Boyle if at times he seems to be talking to himself.

He would probably be asking how he could have allowed four match points to slip away in his match against second seed Mike Curry during the quarter-finals of the BLTA Invitational at Coral Beach yesterday.

"I was that close,'' gestured Boyle, holding up his hand with his fingers hardly showing daylight between them, before bowing 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.

Curry will now meet fourth seed David Lambert in the semi-finals, today at 10.30 a.m.

"I was up 5-3 and 30-0 on his serve, and later I was 5-4 and 40-15 before double faulting, of all things,'' said Boyle.

Then, as if talking to himself again, he murmured "I was that close,'' looking at his fingers again which had not moved any further apart.

That would have been the biggest upset of the week-long tournament. Instead, the biggest could come today, when third- seed James Collieson takes on top-ranked fellow Bermuda Davis Cupper, Mike Way in their 12.30 p.m.

semi-final.

At least according to Collieson, who remembers having two match points when they last met in tournament play, six weeks ago at the All Bermuda Tennis Club Open.

"I'm going to take him,'' said Collieson.

Meanwhile, unknown Canadian Rose Marie Asch of Montreal came through with the biggest upset of the ladies draw when she stunned American Yvonne (Boots) Van Nostrand in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Advancing easily was VonNostrund's husband, King, who is world's top-ranked 60-year-old player.

Asch will face another visiting unknown, Briton Mary Pretty, in today's semi-final.
