Get a Handel on this lunchtime concert
Gallery next Wednesday when three musicians team up to present an hour-long programme of works by Bach and Handel.
Visiting violinist Mathias Boegner and cellist Paul de Jong will join Dr.
Karol Sue Reddington on harpsichord in three works, all written in the key of G.
"The programme will consist of Bach's violin sonata in G, his cello sonata in G, and Handel's piano trio in G,'' Dr. Reddington explained.
"But what is unusual about the latter work is that, instead of a piano, I will play the harpsichord because in Handel's time the piano had not been developed, so it is likely a harpsichord was used. In choosing this instrument for our performance I believe the sound will be closer to the original concept.'' In addition to the harpsichord, Dr. Reddington noted that Mr. Boegner's violin is a 1796 Giulliani violin, while Mr. de Jong's cello is a Rossini built around 1801 -- both of which herald a particularly beautiful sound.
"The concert is open to the public, and will last about an hour, so bring your lunch and enjoy the music,'' she urged.
Admission is free for BNG members, $3 for others.
Meanwhile, Dr. Reddington said that tickets are selling well for the Bermuda Conservatory of Music's March 18 concert, which is entitled `Some Enchanted Evening'.
"It is the first time the Conservatory will be using the Ruth Seaton James Centre,'' she noted. "We chose it because not only are the acoustics far superior to any other venue, but it is also very pretty and the new Steinway piano is gorgeous.'' Tickets (patrons $40, adults $20, seniors $10) are available from Meyer Agencies, Opus One, Piano Plus, Encore, and the Bermuda Conservatory of Music.
*** `Sky', by playwright Connie Gault, opens its two-night run at Daylesford Theatre tonight, produced by Coral Harris under the auspices of the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society.
Set in the 1920s in rural Saskatchewan, this lyrical tale of a pregnant girl, a naive husband, and the Second Coming is both haunting and beautiful.
The penultimate offering in the current series of staged playreadings, `Sky' begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free and seating is on a first come, first served basis.
