Blazer explains youth `mix-up'

"internal error'' for the recent row over changes in the staging of a prestigious youth tournament.

Bermuda were supposed to travel to the Cayman Islands last week for the qualifying round of the Under-17 World Cup, where they were due to face the hosts, Cuba and the US Virgin Islands.

But three days before the team were due to jet out, Bermuda Football Association were told the Cayman FA could not stage the event and the Virgin Islands were pulling out.

Matters became even more clouded when BFA chiefs were then told the competition was now going to be held this week in the Caymans and the Virgin Islands would indeed be appearing.

BFA General Secretary David Sabir protested over the changes to both the Caribbean Football Union and regional governing body CONCACAF.

He said changing the dates would cost the association $8,000 in alterations to airline tickets and an overnight stay in New York and would also lead to the teenagers taking an unscheduled break from school.

As a result a meeting was held last weekend involving both CONCACAF and the CFU and the BFA were informed on Tuesday that because of the confusion they would be given a bye to the next round.

CONCACAF General Secretary, Chuck Blazer said it had not been a difficult dispute to resolve.

"They (the BFA) fully documented the situation, and unfortunately there was a miscommunication regarding alternatives that had been offered and in the end you look to do what's right,'' he said.

"I believe that the decision made by the CFU was appropriate given the circumstances and it wasn't a very difficult thing to do in the end.'' Blazer said that the decision was arrived at without the consultation of the other teams involved.

It is unclear whether it is something they would have agreed with, given that there is now just one spot available to three participating nations in Bermuda's group.

"That's the way the it is. The three other teams are there and they will play and this is what will be,'' Blazer said.

"They haven't been consulted because it was an issue of there being an internal error which caused this problem. That's been addressed and that's all there is to it.'' The BFA have offered to stage the next qualifying round of the tournament, due to be held at the end of January.

Blazer said the decision would be down to the CFU and he was not sure whether the invitation would be accepted or not.

However, he added: "I'm certain it's under consideration.'' CFU General Secretary, Harold Taylor, was unavailable for comment when his office was contacted.
