toll on Bermuda in many ways.

The Government Statistical Department's 1992 Edition of Bermuda Facts and Figures states the total number of jobs has decreased by 952 since 1990, while the population grew from 54,050 in 1980 to 58,460 last year.

The hotel and restaurant industry provided 6,041 jobs last year, a drop of 138 since 1990.

And in the wholesale and retail industry -- the second largest employer -- the number of jobs dropped from 5,537 in 1990 to 5,108 in 1991.

The total number of jobs in Bermuda last year was 34,621.

The decline in jobs within the tourist industry may be a direct result of a fall in tourist arrivals. Last year 514,300 people, a decrease of more than 32,000 from 1990, visited Bermuda.

Retail sales fell an average of 5.6 percent since 1990 and the hotel occupancy rate dropped from 66 percent to 59 percent last year.

The statistical report also shows the amount spent on importing goods dropped from $536 million in 1990 to $446 million last year.

Some $50 million was made from exported goods, a decrease of $11 million from the previous year.

And the number of residential dwelling units built in 1991 was down from 568 to 435.

However, Bermudians can be happy that the number of people convicted of indictable offences dropped from 1,171 people in 1990 to 898 last year.

And Bermudians are also living longer. Life expectancy increased from 73 to 76 for females and 67 to 69 for males.
