Challenger in place to spreadeagle field

Cup standings when Fitted Dinghy racing resumes at Mangrove Bay tomorrow with two races scheduled (2 p.m. and 4 p.m.).

The first race has competitors taking to the waters for the Sandys Boat Club Shield while the day's second outing contains the C.T. Fowle Cup as the victor's spoils.

Paul Fisher and his men have so far distinguished themselves as the top crew with four victories to their credit, including the match racing series and appear on a roll. They have a total of 573 points with five more weekends of competition left.

Looking to take the wind from their sails are Echo , 10 points adrift in second, and defending champions Contest , currently on 421 points. The rest of the list reads Elizabeth (33), Victory (311 ), Port Royal (28) and Bloodhound (21).

Still Fisher was yesterday taking a cautious view of the current gulf between he and the rest of the fleet, insisting that there was still a ways to go before they would feel comfortable in their position.

"Ten points in dinghy racing is not a lot,'' said Fisher, a former Olympian.

"It's something to smile about, but one bad race and that lead could be washed away ... I'm actually surprised to be 10 points in front.

"We've been sailing along, minding our own business and trying to have fun.

"We're not concerned about the overall scores, we just take it one race at a time.'' Also surprising is that Echo , despite her position, has not been the force of a year ago, even with Peter Bromby at the helm.

Granted Bromby has guided the syndicate entry to two wins, but has lacked consistency in performance from week to week.

The renowned skipper is currently abroad taking part in the Nations Cup and a question mark surrounds whether he will be able to return in time to skipper Echo .

However, Fisher is keeping a watchful eye on everyone and hoping that his crew can maintain the level of excellence shown thus far.

"I think Peter just had a bad day (during the last set of races) otherwise he'd be right up there with us,'' said Fisher, who along with Bromby have been offering evening sailing lessons to juniors while operating out of Sandys Boat Club. "It's also unfortunate that Contest had a breakdown or she would have been up there as well. Victory has also been going well since getting a new set of sails.'' "Our key has been that basically we've kept our noses clean and stayed out of trouble.

"The strong point (for us) has been the crew work with everyone working together and able to adapt to each other's job.'' PHOTO PAUL FISHER*l
