Giant-killers Wolves aiming to rewrite Cup record book

Promotion now assured, Wolves can concentrate on becoming the first Second Division team to reach two FA Cup finals.

At the same Bernard Park pitch where they booked a place at National Stadium with a semi-final triumph over Hotels a year ago, Wolves take on North Village in one of four Sunday quarter-final ties (2.30 start).

Wolves, the lone Second Division survivors in the cup, clinched promotion two nights ago when they trounced Somerset Eagles 9-0. Earlier in the week Village had to squeeze out a 1-1 draw with bottom team PHC as their slim title hopes all but disappeared.

This will clearly be a tricky tie for the Red Devils who, while favourites, will probably be a little apprehensive after going out to another Second Division side, Hotels, in the quarter-finals last year.

Is history about to repeat itself? "At this stage of the competition the games can go any way. We are not going into the game with any fear,'' said Wolves coach Dennis Brown.

"I think the pressure is really on Village because they are the First Division team. We are just going out there to enjoy ourselves and basically see what happens. I think it should be a good match.'' Enjoy themselves was what Wolves did last year when they surprised many to reach their first major cup final.

Rumour has it Wolves will be minus utility player John Barry Nusum and defender Joey Rego. Neither played on Thursday night, with Nusum understood to be still suffering from the injury that kept him out of the recent All-Stars match.

"I am not going to say we are going to be without them or anybody else, but whoever I put out there, I expect them to do the job,'' said Brown. "Yes, the two of them are really quality players.

"There are a few adjustments we have to make. We don't plan for every team the same way. Although our system stays the same, our game pattern and strategy will change.'' Brown doesn't see Village as having an edge by playing at home.

"This is Bermuda, not like big countries,'' Brown stressed. "I don't really believe in home field advantage. Everybody knows everybody, you just have to go out there and enjoy the soccer.'' Khari Sharrieff was the Wolves hero in the FA Cup last year, scoring four goals in the later rounds as Wolves got by Vasco in a quarter-final replay and Hotels in the semis before being edged out 3-2 by Boulevard in the final.

Next season they will be up there with the top teams for the first time since the 1990-91 season. And Brown admits they will need a few players to boost their youthful ranks as few of their players have First Division experience.

"Wolves have a quality programme. They have brought these guys up from the age of four and that basically speaks for itself,'' said the coach. "We shouldn't have problems getting new ones in.'' One of the players who could again be linked with a return to Wolves is Boulevard striker Kenny Hill who was Wolves' second top scorer in '90-91 behind Marlon Lindsay.

Hill has been with Boulevard ever since the 91-92 season and while he may be headed back to Wolves next season, the only thing on his mind right now will be helping Boulevard win the cup for a third straight year. That hasn't been achieved since the late 1960s by Somerset Trojans.

The two-time defending champions face a major hurdle, though, with league leaders Vasco being their opponents tomorrow at PHC Stadium.

After their recent 3-3 draw in the league all indicators point to another exciting contest.

In the last few years Boulevard have been the most successful team in the FA Cup and they'll be keen to keep that record intact.

The two other matches should also be close, with Devonshire Colts taking on Dandy Town at White Hill and Southampton Rangers hosting Devonshire Cougars.

Colts have been struggling in the league lately so the cup competitions, FA and Friendship, provide their last hope of getting something out of the season.

Their defence, marshalled by captain Shannon Burgess, will have to watch the strike pair of Darron Simons and Chris Anderson, the latter having made great strides in the last few games with five goals between them.

The Rangers-Cougars match is another that could go either way. Both teams are on a high after recent results.

Rangers have not looked back since their fifth game of the season when they ended a four game losing start by beating Vasco 2-0.

That result still remains one of the biggest upsets of the season and it began Rangers' climb away from the bottom of the table. They have now not lost in the league in 10 games.

Cougars have also climbed off the bottom of the table and will now be hoping things go their way in the cup.
