St David's hold key to promotion
promotion spots this weekend, the battle to see whose places they will take in the First Division will probably go on for some weeks yet.
The top two teams in the Second Division will clinch promotion if St. David's fail to beat both of them in their next two matches.
Wolves could in fact be celebrating this weekend as a combination of a Hamilton Parish win over St. David's on Saturday night and a Wolves win over bottom team Somerset Eagles the next day would seal their destiny.
St. David's, the only other team in the promotion hunt, have to beat Parish on Saturday night at Somerset and then win their remaining matches against Wolves (February 22), Paget and Prospect.
At the same time they must hope that Parish don't collect more than five points from their final three games against Prospect, Social Club and St.
George's.
The St. David's cause wasn't helped when Eagles failed to show up for the recent match against the Islanders which deprived the home team of the chance to boost their goal difference.
Even so, their chances of a straight return to the top flight appear slim as they have to beat both Parish and Wolves and then get some help from other teams.
Last year's two promoted teams, Hotels and Somerset, are still looking anxiously over their shoulders as the relegation battle gets tighter.
Bottom team PHC would appear headed to the Second Division, though a win at Bernard Park over North Village on Sunday could change things. PHC are presently three points adrift at the bottom, but with Hotels and Cougars (eighth and ninth) playing each other at Southampton Oval, this is a good opportunity for the Zebras to boost their survival chances.
Somerset Trojans will also be aiming to continue their climb up the table when they host Dandy Town on Saturday night.
The Trojans have won their last two league matches but the fact that they have been struggling to score goals might be of some concern, especially against a Town team that is hitting form.
Cougars will go ahead of Hotels in the standings if they can pull off victory, so this will be a crucial match for both teams.
Hotels have only managed to score nine goals in 13 outings, though the 15 they have conceded also makes them defensively one of the best teams in the First Division.
In another interesting match leaders Vasco take on Southampton Rangers, the only team to beat them so far in the league.
With Boulevard trailing by five points in second place, they will be hoping Rangers can repeat that achievement, though they still have to worry about their own opponents, Devonshire Colts.
Mid-table Colts have been slumping lately and are out of the running for a second straight league crown. Their hopes of success this time rest in the FA Cup and Friendship Trophy where they are in the quarter and semi-finals.
In tomorrow's other Second Division clash, St. George's are at home to Paget.
