Speech fails to impress PLP leader
Throne Speech.
"It was predictable. There were no surprises. There was no great, new initiatives.'' Mr. Wade said the speech failed to provide the motivation for Bermuda to meet the challenges of the future. "I did not get the feeling people would be motivated by the speech. There was not the motivation so necessary for us to get the Country really moving.'' Mr. Wade said Bermudians had sent a clear message for change in the election.
But Government had not shown itself "in tune'' with the electorate.
"I thought there would be much more in the speech.'' Mr. Wade said the proposals for education were dated and tired. "There were the same old lines which had been used in previous Throne Speeches.'' Mr. Wade claimed the majority of proposed new legislation was also in keeping with the United Bermuda Party's traditional business bias. The emphasis was on money and the economy -- and not social issues.
Mr. Wade stressed he was giving a snap reaction to the Throne Speech. He was working on the Opposition's official reply, which would be delivered in the House of Assembly next Friday.
