yesterday when they admitted importing cannabis into the Island.

Banker Shawn Joseph Murphy, 34, and exterminator David Scott Williams, 30, both of Massachusetts, pleaded guilty when they came before Senior Magistrate Will Francis.

Sgt. Phil Taylor prosecuting, said that Murphy was a cruise passenger on board the Royal Majesty at Ordnance Island on September 30.

Local Customs officers were doing baggage inspections around 11.30 a.m. when they detected a faint smell of cannabis on Murphy's clothing.

Murphy denied smoking or being proximate to anyone who used marijuana but he consented to his room being searched.

Customs officers found a ziploc plastic bag in his cabin within a Kodak camera case as well as cigarette papers and five homemade cigarette butts.

Murphy admitted the drugs and the cigarette papers were his and said that they were for his personal use.

The plant material was found to be 22.79 grams of cannabis.

Meanwhile Williams, who was also a passenger on board the Royal Majesty was subjected to a search of his cabin on the same day.

Two plastic ziploc bags containing plant material, were found in a pair of socks that were lying in a black duffel bag as well as some homemade cigarette butts that had been placed in a black film canister.

There was also some cigarette papers found among the plant material.

The total weight of the cannabis was found in Williams' cabin was 4.79 grams.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined Murphy $1,800 for importing the cannabis and $200 for having the cigarette papers.

And he fined Williams $500 for possessing cannabis and $100 for the cigarette papers.

DISQUALIFIED FOR DRUNK DRIVING CTS Disqualified for drunk driving A 51-year-old Pembroke man was this week banned from driving all motor vehicles for a year.

Michael Andrew Smith, of West Park Lane, admitted in Magistrates' Court to driving a black Suzuki motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor told the court that Smith was seen by patrol officers on the night of August 2.

He was riding along Serpentine Road, Pembroke when the officers noticed him swerving and occasionally riding west in the eastbound lane.

The officers arrested Smith and took him to Hamilton Police Station where it was discovered he had at least 115 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Smith told Senior Magistrate Will Francis: "I apologise for my actions. This is certainly not my demeanour, but I realise my actions need to be dealt with.'' In addition to the driving ban, Mr. Francis ordered Smith to pay a $400 fine.

WARWICK MAN ADMITS DRUG CHARGES CTS Warwick man admits drug charges Nashon Smith spent the first night of a 13 month prison sentence at the Westgate Correctional Facility after he admitted possessing more than $2,000 worth of cannabis with intent to supply.

Smith 24, of Camp Drive, Warwick, also pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine on July 17, 1997.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said that police detectives went to Smith's home and found a ziploc plastic bag containing brown plant material on a table in the living room.

Officers also found four more bags of plant material in the bathroom and twists of white powder inside a ceramic figurine in the living room.

Smith admitted that the plant material belonged to him and said that it was for his personal use.

Initially he denied that the cocaine belonged to him but he later recanted.

The plant material and white powder was analysed and found to be the drugs cannabis and cocaine respectively.

The cannabis weighed 43.5 grams and the cocaine weighed 7.5 grams. The cannabis had a street value of $2,175.

Sgt. Taylor pointed out that Smith had prior convictions for drugs including a six month suspended sentence for cannabis possession with intent to supply last January.

On hearing that, Mr. Francis activated the suspended sentence and added another seven months for the cocaine possession. A further six months was imposed for the cannabis possession with intent to supply charge but it will run concurrent to the 13 month term he is already serving.
