Frost defends title

tested when he puts his Bermuda Open title on the line today at the Bermuda College gym (11 a.m.) The tournament will feature eight of the top players in Bermuda, although BTTA president Mike Lindo is abroad and won't compete.

Dark horses could be Philip Hackett of Barbados and Douglas Lane of the UK.

Hackett was one of the top 10 players a few years ago when he was living in Bermuda.

Frost's record, however, speaks for itself and his allround game could prevail. But number two seed and former champion Dexter Smith (25-2) has come a long way this season after a slow start.

Derron Trott (46-2), who recently edged Smith in tournament play, is a dangerous southpaw with serves, loops and smashes which are backed up by a good defence.

Dave Waltham (39-6) is the best defensive chopper in the competition, mixed with aggression, and is capable of winning it all. Another to watch is Rawle Frederick (45-6) who has a vicious forehand attack.

Frederick will partner Hackett in a pairing to watch in the doubles where Frost and Waltham are favourites to retain their crown. Lane will partner Myron Piper while Dexter Smith will team up with Curtis Hodgson and Trott will play with Calvin Butterfield.
