Marblehead Olympic Class Regatta for Star class boats in Massachusetts at the weekend.

Bromby and White finished one notch above where they sat at the conclusion of last year's event, proving once again how they are enjoying an upward climb for next year's Olympic Games in Atlanta.

American Dave Curtis of Marblehead stitched together a slim two-point advantage over the Bermuda sailors to win the regatta, finishing the six races on 10 points.

The regatta was supposed to have been eight races, but the final two were cancelled yesterday because of thick fog.

Finishing third was John McAusland of Cooper River, Massachusetts.

"We're happy with it,'' said Bromby yesterday in a telephone interview.

"Certainly when there is a breeze our speed has been much better than in the past.'' That is one area where Bromby and White are trying to work on in preparation for the Olympics. "We're getting more time in the boat in Bermuda,'' said Bromby, giving at least one reason for strong results this year. A week ago the Bermudians finished second at a regatta in Connecticut.

Bromby and White return home today with a busy summer on tap with a pre-Olympic competition in Savannah, Georgia next month followed by the European Championships in Portugal in August and the World Championships in Spain in September.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Smith, winner last year in the Laser class, finished third this time on 16 points behind David Vancleef of Annapolis, Maryland, and Tim Wadlow of San Diego, California who were first and second respectively.
