Islanders off the mark!
St. David's were celebrating their first win of the season last night after shocking league leaders Dandy Town with a virtuoso display at St. John's Field.
From the start, the visitors appeared more determined and fluent in their play and in the end reaped the fruit of their labour.
Fleet-footed forward Chae Simmons emerged as the hero for St. David's as he buried the home side with a pair of second half strikes. Lionel Furbert gave Town a glimmer of hope with a late goal that drew them within one, but that would be as close as they got.
"This week we really came together and worked hard in training and it showed today,'' said player/coach Andrew Bascome afterwards. "Coming in against Town we felt that if we took away their forwards' options that would help us, and it did.'' Indeed, St.David's defence did an impeccable job in silencing Town's main man up front, striker Darron Simons, while Carlos Smith spent the first half on the substitutes' bench and was ineffective once coming off it.
Little separated the two sides during the first half, with St. David's not the least intimidated by `name brand' opponents, taking matters to Town and enjoying an edge in possession.
A similar scenario unfurled among the early going of the second half, and things took a decided turn in the 58th minute.
Simmons, who had moments earlier drawn the ire of St. David's' supporters in squandering a breakaway, booted them into the lead with an angled blast from close in after Town's defence were baffled by a looping ball into the penalty area.
Town should have equalised a minute later, but Wylie Rudo could only hold his head in shame as he failed to convert a penalty awarded after Del Hollis upended Reggie Tucker.
Simmons made them pay for that gaffe in the 79th with his second tally.
Substitute Sergio Goater created the chance, outstripping the defence on the right side and crossing for Keith Jennings who had his attempt blocked. But Simmons made no mistake with the rebound.
Town's reply came much to late, Furbert's 80th minute goal no more than cosmetic.
"This is a character building thing for us. I've had to make sacrifices, the team has as well and it paid off for us and hopefully it gives the team confidence and shows us that if we work hard we can be competitive against anybody,'' added Bascome.
Town coach Mark Trott conceded that his side lacked desire on the day and paid the price.
"St. David's wanted it more than us and were more cohesive in their play,'' said Trott.
