Drunk drivers disqualified

Aaron Lynn Benevides, 25, of Luke's Pond Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while impaired driving.

Prosecutor Inspector Peter Giles told the court that on January 29 at 2.35 a.m. on Trimingham Hill in Paget, Police found Benevides in his car which had stopped after colliding with the sidewalk.

As they spoke to him they noticed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were red.

Upon asking Benevides to exit the vehicle, they also noticed he had difficulty standing unaided.

When asked if he had been drinking Benevides replied: "Yes I have been drinking and I have hit the sidewalk.'' He was conveyed to Hamilton Police Station where he tested at 209 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered him to pay a $450 fine and disqualified him from all motor vehicles for 12 months.

A Southampton man lost his license and paid $500 last week for driving with three times the legal alcohol limit.

Kurt Joel Benevides, 42, of Middle Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to the charge of impaired driving.

Prosecutor Inspector Peter Giles told the court that on January 21 at 9.32 p.m., Benevides was spotted by Police speeding along Middle Road in Southampton.

One of the officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

When he was stopped, the officers noticed that his eyes were glazed, his breath smelled of intoxicants and his speech was slurred.

When ordered to exit his vehicle, officers noted that Benevides had difficulty standing.

When asked if he had been drinking, he answered: "Yes, I had one beer.'' Benevides was then transported to the Somerset Police Station where his blood alcohol level tested as 258 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitre of blood.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis fined him $500 and took him off the road for 12 months.
