Village do enough to go top of tables
The Jennings family made life hell for St. David's yesterday.
First, striker Kevin Jennings shot North Village into the lead with a bewildering 36th-minute strike.
It was a goal that had the home side's defenders and supporters shaking their heads in disbelief.
Jennings picked up the ball 20 yards out after a corner and arrowed it between a forest of defenders' legs.
St. David's goalie Dale Fox -- no doubt blinded -- remained rooted to the spot as the ball zipped along the ground into the right-hand corner of the net.
Then it was the turn of Kevin's uncle to pile on the misery for St. David's.
Elliott Jennings bagged two second-half goals with simple tap-ins after some sweet midfield movements.
They came as unremitting pressure by Village finally paid off against opponents clearly out of their class.
In truth, however, this was a game that both sides are unlikely to remember for long.
The heat badly sapped the strength from players' legs, destroying any chance of a decent spectacle at St. David's for the fans.
Against the run of play, it was St. David's who had the best chance of scoring in the opening skirmishes.
Anthony Darrell found himself in great position from 15 yards with the game barely five minutes old.
With Village's goalkeeper Anthony Swan out of position, and Darrell having time and space to control the ball and shoot, a goal was on the cards.
But Darrell appeared surprised by his opportunity and made a dreadful hash of things.
He sent the ball ballooning over the bar.
Shortly afterwards, Elliott Jennings linked up with Tito Smith outside St.
David's penalty area, to give Kevin Jennings a possible chance.
He struck the ball with the inside of the foot, sending it spinning viciously to the left of Fox's post.
Apart from the solitary goal, however, Village generally flattered to deceive as they failed to make their vast superiority tell.
The second half promised brighter things for Village when Elliott Jennings pounced in the 47th minute to stab the ball home from three yards.
It took until the 74th minute, however, for Village to strike again.
This time Kentoine Jennings swept the ball to his namesake, who poached again in the goalmouth.
For the fans who had been predicting a rout, a 3-0 scoreline was something of a disappointment.
The match marked to return to competitive play of player/coach Andrew Bascome.
