Young talent shines at track champs

be no denying the abundance of young talent on display at the National Sports Centre during the weekend's Track and Field National Championships.

CARIFTA Games silver medallist Britteny Marshall continued her domination of the discus with a winning throw of 35.7 metres, and hers was but one of many fine showings during the course of the two days.

Damian Simmons and Richard Walcott hooked up in an epic battle in the 800 metres, with the latter winning in one minute, 59.5 seconds, compared to Simmons' 1:59.7.

Another Britteny -- this with the surname Pitt -- showed well in the 800 metres and 1500, winning both, while Kimberley Fisher was likewise impressive over the middle distances.

"We've had a good two days -- the weather threatened -- but overall we've had two days to see some of the potential we have here in Bermuda,'' said national coach Gerry Swan.

"The talent is undeniable and what we will do is look at some of the results from the championships and use it as a basis of recruiting and hopefully as a means of appealing to people to join the track and field programme.'' Meanwhile, BTFA vice-president Mike Swan held out special praise for athletes, parents and spectators alike.

"We had a good turnout of athletes and parents and many good performances from the athletes who are trying to get ready for the Russell E. Blunt Championships and some of those preparing for the CAC Junior Games,'' said Swan.

"Overall it was a good event, with a lot of parental involvement. The athletes and parents have been patient, which made for a good event.'' Note: Full results from the National Championships will appear on Sports Scoreboard later this week.
