Robinson double rocks Wolves

Village struck three times in seven minutes shortly after the interval at Devonshire Rec yesterday to sink a shellshocked Wolves and keep their outside hopes of a First Division league title alive.

Neil Robinson scored twice in three minutes, the second from a hotly disputed penalty, before Kaiwon Dill, a first half substitute for the injured Elliott Jennings, rather fortuitously got his name on the scoresheet.

Dill, though, had already proved his worth, setting up Robinson's opener in the 55th minute.

Twice gaining possession in the 18-yard area but finding his way to goal blocked, he spotted Robinson, hitherto having a quiet afternoon, to his left.

He picked him out with a precise ball and Robinson let fire from an acute angle, squeezing a powerful shot between Wolves goalkeeper Hevonnie Brown and his right hand post.

Two minutes later Sergio Goater crossed from the right and referee Gregory Simons ruled that it had struck Anthony Thomas' hand a yard inside the box.

Thomas protested vehemently that the ball had hit him on the chest, but Simons was not to be moved and Robinson blasted the spot kick wide of Brown's diving frame for his 11th goal of the season.

Then, in the 62nd minute, Brown came off his line to clear a relatively harmless ball into the middle but succeeded only in hammering it into the face of the pursuing Dill, whose surprise was matched by his delight an instant later as he watched it rebound back into the net.

Wolves, who'd had slightly the better of the first 45 minutes, could barely believe it and as they lost their defensive discipline, Village could have grabbed more. Robinson, his appetite restored, began to eat up the space now available to him through the middle, while Kevin Jennings started to go through his repetoire of clever turns and tricks.

Robinson double rocks Wolves From Page 25 Jennings, in fact, should have scored two himself, first when finding a shooting opportunity from 12 yards and then as Robinson's flick picked up his surge through the middle.

Wolves, though, had missed the best openings before the break, Ellington Weldon shooting straight into Nyon Steede's grateful arms from close range after 21 minutes following Nakia Smith's ball from the byline.

And minutes earlier Weldon had sent Steede diving full length across his goal as his dipping shot from 25 yards went perilously close to the keeper's right hand post.
