Juniors solid in San Diego
week at the Junior World Golf Championships being held in San Diego, California.
Robert Spurling, Quinton Sherlock and Michael Sims all failed to make the cut among the 13-14 age group, but played well among a field 164 at the tournament containing 860 competitors from 37 different countries.
"They represented themselves very well and all shot within their handicaps,'' said tour manager Keith Spurling.
Fourteen-year-old Spurling carded the best score of the threesome, his two round total of 151 -- from rounds of 75 and 76 -- a mere three shots over the cut-off of 148. It is believed to be the closest a Bermudian male has come to making the cut at this tournament.
To emphasise the increased standard at this year's tournament Spurling noted that last year's cut-off was 155 at the same course, Mission Trails, an 18-hole par-71.
Meanwhile, Sherlock weighed in with rounds of 76 and 80 for 156 and Sims scorecards showed 79 and 80, giving him 163 for the two days.
Utah native Boyd Summerhays, on the tails of a first round 66 which tied the course record, led on 137 heading into the final round, this after registering a 73 his second time out.
Today has the boys going out to watch the senior boys competition -- age 15-17 -- that includes teenage prodigy Tiger Woods.
Following their tour of the west coast they will travel to the eastern seaboard for a week of schooling at Pinehurst Golf and Country Club in North Carolina.
Finally the trio head to Ohio, where they are scheduled to join other leading local juniors Steve Carruthers and Chris Garland in tackling the Ohio Tournament of Champions.
ROBERT SPURLING -- Carded a two-round total of 151, only three shots over the cut-off.
