Bermuda businessmen plan to buy cable
television at the US Naval Air Station, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Mr. Ward Young and Mr. Fernance Perry are applying to incorporate Antilles Cable TV Bermuda Ltd., which could purchase Atlanta-based Antilles Cable Co.
"The company is in the process of incorporation. It would be presumptuous to say very much at this time,'' Mr. Young said.
Atlanta-based Antilles Cable Co. currently provides television cable service via satellite down link and cable infrastructure to Base residents. There is a franchise office located at the Base.
Without Antilles Cable Co., there would be no cable TV on the Base because the US system is not compatible with the Bermuda cable system, said US Base commanding officer Capt. Tim Bryan.
"There may be a company interested in purchasing the existing cable network and grid. Though it is not compatible now it may some day be possible to integrate it with the Bermuda cable system,'' he said.
The owner of Antilles Cable Co., Mr. Bill Browning, recently fell ill and died. His last visit to the Island was only a few weeks ago, according to Capt. Bryan.
"He was a great supporter of the Navy people at the Base. He continued to supply cable television here despite subscriptions dropping and perhaps even taking a loss,'' he said.
Mr. Allen Archibald, at the Base Transition Office, said yesterday Antilles Cable Company has the contract with the Navy at this time but the transfer of ownership of the cable television system has not been discussed in connection with the return of the Base lands to Bermuda.
Mr. Young is president of BDC Ltd., a large family controlled firm that owns the BGA (Bermuda General Agency) group of companies and the Phoenix Stores while Mr. Perry, is the president and majority shareholder of Bermuda Broadcasting Company Ltd.
Mr. Perry and Mr. Young serve on Bank of Bermuda, BBC, Bermuda Container Line and BDC boards.
Mr. Young is a director of TeleBermuda International, a company, which if licensed, is promising lower international telecommunications rates.
