Ferguson places first in NCAA cross-country
Ferguson not only romped to victory in the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Cross-Country Regional Championship in Big Pool, Maryland last weekend but did so in record time! Running for her school, Rhodes College of Memphis, Tennessee where she is a senior, Ferguson, 22, was first in the women's race amongst more than 150 runners.
She completed the 5-K course in 18 minutes, 23.5 seconds and was her second sub-19 minute run and second Collegiate victory. Ferguson was some 20 yards ahead of the second place runner at the uphill finish.
Ferguson was fourth in the equivalent regional last year and this year's win was special as not only were her parents there to see it, but, as a senior, this also marks the end of her Collegiate Cross Country running career.
The event was held at the Fort Frederick State Park, which was used as a prison for British soldiers in the Revolutionary War. Ironically, a Bermudian of British descent, was first amongst a field of predominantly Americans.
Some 25 colleges/universities participated in the women's race and most teams had seven runners. Ferguson's win qualifies her for the NCAA Nationals which are to be run in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
