Tragedy or comedy?

Should we be laughing or crying? I believe that depends on an individual's view of events. The very same thing that make some laugh cause others to cry.

Should we be laughing or crying? I believe that depends on an individual's view of events.

The very same thing that make some laugh cause others to cry.

The positioning of two articles in your Wednesday's newspaper made me do both.

It seems there were two drunks storming around in public waving hoes, threatening bodily harm, assaulting policemen, using profane language, chasing motorists, asking to be beaten, and hurling racial remarks at people.

It is not at all surprising that they ended up in court. One of them had no memory at all about any of it. He could have killed somebody and not even remembered it. The other fellow was quite pleased that he had "carried himself a little better''.

I guess that means that he did not have a how. Now you have to admit, this is funny stuff; and it gets better. They both pleaded guilty and apologized admitting to the judge that they were totally under the influence of a very dangerous drug.

In this case the judge let these gentlemen walk from his chamber of justice with less than a tap on the wrist, and ensured, by the sentence meted out, that they would continue to enjoy an unblemished criminal record.

The other article is about a gentleman out for a stroll, thats all, not harming a single soul. at peace with himself and everybody around him. Well, except for the Police.

He's pounced on and searched because he "appeared nervous''. I think that under the circumstances I might get a bit nervous myself.

Anyway, he has enough marijuana in his pocket to make one joint. IF they had apprehended him earlier they would have gotten two joints worth. This gentleman, without resisting arrest, is dragged off to the same court and before the same judge as the drunks.

What happens to him! He's fined $700, and that's not all; an extra $1,000 is added because he near a place where alcohol, the stuff the drunks were on, is being sold and consumed.

And that's not all; this gentleman now has a criminal record, or a longer one depending on how many times he's been caught.

So you tell me, is this a comedy or a tragedy? AL EASTMOND Devonshire Stop butchering trees Dear Sir, May I Please add my voice to the growing concern over the mutilation of our roadside vegetation at the hands of Works and Engineering.

The row of trees at the entrance to the airport, and the fairly extensive row of oleanders and other hedging near St. John's church are bad enough, but surely the sorriest sight of all is the poinciana at the junction of Pitt's Bay, Serpentine and Fairlands Roads. If the hope is that this pathetic stump will eventually sprout new branches, it would seem likely that these branches will be a traffic hazard, as they will be at eye level and will obstruct the motorist' view of oncoming traffic at this very busy intersection.

Hopefully W&E will postpone any further destruction of what amounts to decades of plant growth, until their crews have been trained in the correct procedure for this task Janet Percy St. David's
