Edness under fire over killings

Wednesday for failing to leave MPs enough time to debate problems in the prisons and social services during the Budget Debate.

Shadow Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome (PLP) said he had not been allowed to question Mr. Edness's responsibility over the scandal of a prisoner on a working party who killed a German visitor in Dockyard.

Speaking during the motion to adjourn in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, he also hit out at hospital cuts and said in the Country's prisons incarceration was still a higher priority than education.

But Mr. Bascome failed to get any answers as Mr. Edness had already left the House.

Shadow Minister of Education Ms Jennifer Smith (PLP) said Bermuda should tighten its laws concerning its marine history.

Her concerns followed the recent finding of a piece of rock believed to be from a meteorite. The artifact had been kept by the divers who found it instead of going to one of the Island's museums.

Deputy Opposition Leader Mr. Walter Roberts (PLP) asked that the House note his comment that a Government tender boat had sunk on its launch in Holland was not true. The boat had sunk later that evening and had caught fire more recently.

Mr. Roberts said: "The boat has been put in mothballs because it was the only thing the Government could really do with it.'' He also asked if a new Bermuda national football coach would be available to work with youngsters on the Island. Education Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons (UBP) confirmed this.

Mr. Simons also pointed out a new scheme at Warwick Academy, Whitney Institute and Berkeley Institute where a "peer programme'' is helping youngsters learn to behave.
