BIBA says it welcomes debate on int'l business

The Bermuda International Business Association (BIBA) yesterday called on Government and the private sector to "continue working on a collaborative basis'' in addressing issues affecting the industry.

"We remain focused on ensuring that Bermuda continues to be regarded as an attractive, sensibly-regulated business centre,'' deputy chairman Barry Shailer added in a press release last night.

Mr. Shailer noted that BIBA regarded the "recent open debate'' on international business "as an opportunity to develop policies in a balanced, constructive manner''.

And he stressed the need for "a positive atmosphere of co-operation'' in future discussions about issues such as the proposed revised immigration policies and the management of growth of the industry.

He commended the fact that the draft policies had been circulated to the appropriate groups for consultation and comment.

Mr. Shailer continued: "The broader issue of managing growth in order to protect Bermuda's environment and the local way of life goes beyond this discussion, but also needs to be addressed on a co-operative basis, for mutual benefit.'' He noted: "Bermuda's competitive position as a jurisdiction is central to these discussions. We remain focused on ensuring that Bermuda continues to be regarded as an attractive, sensibly-regulated business centre.

"That is the basis of our participation at all levels of the ongoing discussions. We encourage all parties to bear this fundamental point in mind, and to address the current range of issues under consideration via constructive, open dialogue.

"Continuing to work on a collaborative basis, between the public and private sectors, is the best way for Bermuda to maintain its status as a leading business jurisdiction,'' Mr. Shailer said.

"Our indications are that there is a genuine desire within Government and international business to address issues together for the overall benefit of all concerned.''
