Coach Best seeking fresh tests for national squads

of the Bermuda Football Association -- president Neville Tyrrell and general secretary David Sabir -- can find some opposition for the various Nationals squads soon.. The duo have been in Trinidad and Tobago for the last three days where they are attending the Caribbean Football Union's annual general meeting.

They are also expected to investigate the possibility of getting matches for the squads.

Jon Beard, BFA's coaching chairman, confirmed that it has always been their intention to keep the squads active -- notiing that he was hoping that some international matches could be found for the senior squad and the Under-23's in particular.

"We told the senior squad that we hoped to have a game a month, or at least that should be our annual schedule particularly with the World Cup qualifying come up.

"As far as the Under-23s are concerned, our intention is to provide them with a tour this summer and maintain some fixtures so that they will be ready for the World Cup qualifying round early next year,'' said Beard.

The senior national squad were recently involved in the Caribbean Nations Cup qualifying round at National Stadium, but the Under-23s were stunned when they discovered that their World Cup qualifying round in March was cancelled after it had been wrongly scheduled a year ahead of its actual date.

Former Bermuda national coach Gary Darrell is in charge of the Under-23s and some parents have already gone public by voicing their disgust in seeing the youths let down by CONCACAF.

CONCACAF failed to provide notice of the scheduling flaw.

Long-serving soccer official Gregory Grimes has been elected president of the Bermuda Referees Association, replacing Stuart Crockwell.

At the annual general meeting at Police Club, Grimes, a former referee and BFA Director, was elected unopposed to the post that he held for five years prior to Crockwell's election.

Lyndon Raynor was returned as vice president, while the new secretary-treasurer is Vance Campbell.
