Evans misses Poland spot

Aaron Evans has narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 400 metres at the World Junior Championships in Poland, by three tenths of a second, running a 48.38 with the qualifying time being 48.08.

In a race against the clock, Aaron Evans blazed to a 48.38 clocking in the 400.

"It is great to have Aaron running these times," said Donna Watson of the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA).

"I am to understand he was running against the clock, so hopefully in his next outing with competitors to run against he can meet his goals.

"I am happy for him and hope he can get the mark needed.

"If he were an NCAA Division III athlete, he would be the –19 fastest runner in the country over this distance, which is a good showing for someone from such a small Island as Bermuda."

In the fall, Evans will be a full-scholarship runner at the University of Memphis, in Division I in the United States.

The Flyers Track Club are putting on an XL Pre-24th May Track Meet at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on May 17th, beginning at 10:00am.

Invitations have been sent out to athletes in all age groups from the primary boys and girls that placed in the top eight at the Interschool sports finals all the way up to high school athletes.

Categories include all races from 100 metres through to 1500 metres as well as high jump and long jump for primary.

The middle school boys and girls will also be involved in the 100 metres right up to 3000 metres, high jump and long jump.

The high school males and females will compete in the 100 metres up to 3000 metres, high jump and long jump along with discus and shot put.

"This is a yearly event we put on," said Watson.

"We wanted to change the format to give more kids a chance to compete in the events. This is a good way to get kids involved in the sport of track and field."

Track and running clubs that are interested in their athletes participating in this event who have not received an invitation can also register.

Registration and packet pickup will begin at 9:00am with a fee of $5.00 at the National Stadium.

Late registrations will be accepted but not preferred. The organisers are asking for all officials to be at the National Stadium no later than 9:30am.
