Run for Freedom to donate to Coalition for the Protection of Children
The Coalition for the Protection of Children (CPC) has been chosen as the charity to benefit from part of the funds raised Bermuda's first Run for Freedom tomorrow.
Yesterday Run for Freedom organisers said: "As the Run For Freedom is focusing on the present and future well being of people in the global community we felt it fitting to support a local charity, The Coalition for the Protection of Children, that is providing support, guidance and even food through their 'Breakfast for Every Child' programme for children in this community as they are Bermuda's future."
CPC chairperson, Sheelagh Cooper, said she was happy the charity will be receiving part of the proceeds as they do so much for children and families across the Island.
She also said she would be volunteering at the event.
"This effort has already served to raise the consciousness of our local community about the continued plight of so many children around the world enslaved or forced to work in inhumane conditions.
"And of course the money raised will hope to expand this kind of awareness well beyond our shores. We are very pleased for the children of Bermuda that part of the proceeds of the run will go to our 'Breakfast for Every Child' programme at the coalition."
CPC was founded in 1992 as a charitable foundation providing a broad range of services to children and their families including intervention and treatment, family support and aftercare, public education, financial support for single mothers and parenting programmes.
The charity also operates the Centre for Community and Family Mediation which provides mediation and conflict resolution services to parents.
In September, CPC launched, 'Breakfast for Every Child', a programme that provides breakfast for every single student at Victor Scott Primary School. So far, they have provided almost 8,000 breakfasts to children who would normally spend the morning hungry.
The run, which can also be walked, starts at 1 p.m. at Barr's Bay Park and finishes at the same spot, where entertainment is being lined up from 1.45 p.m. Late-comers will be encouraged to do the walk and catch up afterwards. Anyone who has registered and wants a free T-shirt and goody bag should get there before 12.30 p.m.
Entry forms are available from Daisy & Mac, Washington Mall Upper Level, KAFU Hair and Gallery in Parliament Street, The Royal Gazette office in Par-la-Ville, and are being distributed elsewhere.
So far, more than 200 people have handed in entry forms, but it's still not too late to join in the fun.
It costs $10 for children up to 16; $20 for adults; $50 for a family of four; $30 to enter on the day of the event.
You can send direct payments to Bank of Bermuda's Run For Freedom account on 010-778488-011.
