Average Cougars triumph in battle of the mediocre
St David’s 2Devonshire Cougars 4The Bermuda Football Association were in any doubt as to the awful state of the game on the Island then they only had to be at Lords yesterday.Ineptitude was the defining characteristic of the encounter between St David’s and Devonshire Cougars, although there was also a healthy dose of mediocrity thrown in for good measure. In many ways it was like an episode of The Young and the Restless; utter rubbish yet strangely compelling at the same time.Cougars can at least point to this being their third game in seven days by way of mitigation. St David’s have no such excuse and their team selection didn’t help either. With the unfit and out of his depth George O’Brien ineffective upfront and Kiemo Bean, who was just out of his depth, being tormented at left back by Lejuan Simmons, the home side essentially played the majority of the first half with nine men.Not that it mattered for the first half an hour because Cougars were just as bad.Neither side could string more than two passes together, and if they did look like getting into an attackting position the final ball was invariably well off target. It was something of a surprise then when Cougars went in front with Tumani Steede’s ball finding Simmons completely unmarked on the edge of the area. Simmons fired the ball past the sloth-like figure of Corey Richardson and Cougars were one up.They went further ahead five minutes later when another good ball from Tumani Steede opened up the St David’s defence and Jamie Smith’s cutback was turned in by Kwame Steede. At that point Bean was replaced by Diego McCallan and at half-time O’Brien and Tre Govia gave way to Angelo Cannonier and Landro Minors. The replacements at least gave the home side the appearance of solidity and when Cougars’ notoriously shaky defence allowed Fiqre Crockwell’s corner to go straight in, the game was far from over.It should have been once Simmons grabbed his –second, but two minutes –later St David’s were back in it when Cannonier beat –Kijuan Franks in a foot race to a long ball out of defence and smashed it past Ricardo Brangman.Cannonier should have levelled the game moments later when Otis Minors got clear down the right and found his strike-partner unmarked at the back post. Cannonier, though, headed just wide and Cougars went up the other end and finally put the game beyond St David’s’ reach. Not for the first time the home switched off at the back and Kwame Steede’s through ball ran across the penalty area to Tamani Steede, who dinked the ball over Richardson for his second goal of the game.St David’s: C Richardson, A Wolfe, K Bean (D McCallan, 39), T Webb-Caisey, A Lugo, D Butterfield, T Govia (L Minors, 46), F Crockwell, D Paynter, O Minors, G O’Brien (A Cannonier, 46).
