Hockey team made to suffer at CAC

Bermuda's national ladies' hockey team got off to a slow start over the weekend in Puerto Rico where they are competing in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.

The squad suffered a demoralising 8-0 loss at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago in their first match of the tournament last Sunday.

Trinidad are currently leading the pack after defeating Puerto Rico 2-0 on Monday while Bermuda suffered a second loss.

Mexico put Bermuda away 4-0 to take their tournament record to one win and one draw (against Jamaica).

The two losses have left Bermuda tied for last place with the also winless Puerto Rico.

Play continues throughout this week.

In local play, only a few matches took place as a large number of players are at the Games.

In the only Women's A match, Swifts were happy to secure a 2-0 win over Police Orioles.

The young squad played a determined match against the veteran Orioles. Swifts back four of Clemmie Stubbs, Anna Terceira, Tracy Houghton and Mandy Oliver allowed Orioles only one penalty corner in the entire match as they dealt firmly with their opponents' attacking threats.

Swifts opened scoring in the 12th minute as Kristan Law swept in an Emily Leitch free hit from just outside the circle.

Amy Smith stepped up to add another, picking up the ball on the left just inside the 25 yard line to beat two defenders before slamming a powerful shot from the top of circle into the top of the net, shocking the Orioles' keeper.

Swifts went to the break with a two-goal lead which was to hold for the remainder of the match.

The second half saw Swifts controlling the game up front with hard work from Smith, but failing to add any more goals. It was the third win of the season for the youngsters.

In the B game, Orioles turned the tables on Swifts, notching a 1-0 victory.

Orioles put the game away minutes before the break as their right winger scored when she found herself unmarked in front of goal.

Although the younger Swifts team played some excellent hockey, they failed to convert any of their chances.

In other B match, Cardinals handily defeated Bluebirds 3-0 as the two squads met for the first time this season.

Cards played a consistent passing game to steal the momentum from the Blues throughout the match.

The win should ensure that Cards' confidence is high for their match against league-leading Swallows this Sunday.

No men's games were played on the weekend, but Chameleons earned three more points when Upstarts failed to field a full squad.
