`Give me goals', Cougars' boss tells strikers
Devonshire Cougars' boss Albie Smith is hoping that his team will sharpen up their finishing and make better use of their scoring chances tonight than they did on Sunday.
Blown chances cost them dearly against Devonshire Colts in their 1-1 Premier Division draw at White Hill at the weekend, and now against the same opponents in tonight's Friendship Trophy match-up he is hoping his strike force will prove far more deadly.
The match at Devonshire Rec. kicks off at 9 p.m. with The Shield opener featuring a clash between Southampton Rangers and Wolves at 7 p.m.
Smith's call for his players to be more accurate will not be limited to his key strikers Raymond Beach and Heys Wolffe, but many others who were guilty of poor finishing on Sunday.
"We have to just come out with the right frame of mind and attitude to get the job completed, but I think we will overcome the problems that we had on Sunday," said the coach.
At the weekend Cougars caught Colts' defence minus skipper Shannon Burgess who was watching from the sidelines injured.
His absence made it easier for Beach and Wolffe to create scoring chances, but Colts were let off the hook far too often.
It is unlikely that Colts will be that generous this time around and Cougars' coach Smith realises his players have to put Sunday's performance behind them and be prepared for different and perhaps greater challenges tonight.
"First of all it will take a team effort and goals - goals are what really win the games,'' he said.
"The important thing is that we created chances on Sunday. It was just unfortunate that we didn't capitalise on them. But hopefully come (tonight) we will have sorted that out."
Cougars though will have to steady themselves in defence where they also looked listless at times on Sunday without player-coach Shawn Smith, also recovering from an injury.
Colts' striker Aljame Zuill was unable to do any damage in that game but Cougars should expect him to be more of a force this time around.
