Singleton admits: ?I have to concentrate?
Bermuda?s Winter Olympian Patrick Singleton admits he needs to ?concentrate harder? if he is to make serious inroads into the upper echelons of skeleton racing.
Singleton finished a creditable 11th in the opening Europa Cup race of the season in Igls, Austria, last weekend but felt he could have done more.
?I had a good first run in the race considering I had a poor start number (22),? said Singleton, bidding for glory in the Torino Olympics in just 83 days.
?My push was 5.24 seconds which was 2.5 tenths faster than last season. I was very happy with my push and I drove to eighth place after the first run. I was only about two tenths off second place after the first run and I thought I would stand on the podium after the second run.
?But I and all my training partners on the British team made a tactical error after the first run. I changed my runner to a more aggressive setting and as a result had a few small skids on the second run. Those small skids dropped me into 11th place.?
And he felt that his push, normally the weakest link in his performance, was not the reason that he slipped down the places.
?Let me say this, my push didn?t let me down,? he continued.
?I started from around 15th place instead of 47th last year. I can live and be highly competitive with a two tenths slower push than the best. In fact I was really happy with how I performed on the start.
?The track that we raced on is known as a pushers? track so I was very happy with my first run performance and my overall push.
?But my second run was my own fault and I need to concentrate harder for the next race.?
Singleton is currently training in Konigssee in Southern Germany but will drive to Torino over the weekend for an official Olympic test event next week.
