Chameleons blend into first place with 6-2 romp
Chameleons solidified their spot at the top of the men?s league on Saturday with a key 6-2 win over Upstarts.
With four wins in four matches, the Reds now sit comfortably ahead of possible title challengers such as Upstarts and Police ? tied for second place at seven points each.
Chameleons and Upstarts squared off for an exciting match and there was definitely a feeling that this game could have gone either way.
Upstarts sprang to attack from the first whistle with Gareth Tavares combining with Phil McRoberts to charge the Chameleons? D but nothing materialised and Chameleons soon grabbed possession.
The Reds earned a short corner within the first four minutes of play but the resulting Stevie Moreton strike went well high of the target.
Back with another short corner just four minutes later, however, Moreton this time slipped the ball to Derek Gould who found the mark ? putting Chameleons first on the scoreboard.
The goal was an early confidence booster for the Reds.
Upstarts soon earned their first short corner of the match but were unable to seize the opportunity ? a weakness which plagued them throughout the match as they failed to convert any of their five short corners.
Chameleons were much more consistent in this regard as they demonstrated when Pete Illston earned a short with 11 minutes left in the first half.
Moreton found Bill Spencer on the left post, who stopped the ball on a reverse stick, and spun round to slot it into the opposite corner of the net to bring the Reds up 2-0.
Upstarts fought for opportunities for the remainder of the half, earning two more unrealised short corners.
Chameleons again drew blood just before the break, however, as Spencer found his second goal of the match with a hard on-target shot from the top of the D.
Upstarts re-emerged from the break charging for early opportunities but sadly could not hit the target when it mattered.
They would not remain scoreless for long. They were awarded a penalty flick after roughly seven minutes of play when the umpire called Chameleons ?keeper Mark Stevens for a deliberate foul in the D.
Tavares stepped up to calmly slip the shot to the left of Stevens and bring Upstarts back into the game.
Chameleons barely broke stride, however, and were quickly back with another short corner.
Moreton took the shot himself this time, lobbing over the keeper to bring the match to 4-1.
The game seemed firmly put away when Illston then worked the ball up the left to send a cross into the D which Tim Goodyer got a touch on just in time to extend their lead to four goals.
Chameleons were soon forced to play short-handed, however, as Spencer was carded for a bad tackle which had sent both himself and an Upstart rolling.
His team-mates filled the gap ? with Mark Finnigan beating two defenders with some fancy stickwork, down the midfield and into the D ? but did not score again while playing short.
Upstarts found a dignity-saving goal, however, as Eoghan O?Dwyer single-handedly worked down the right side to feed a ball to McRoberts who guided it home.
But the Reds also put another late push on goal and Illston found Finnigan who found Nick Roberts to seal the 6-2 result.
In other men?s match of the weekend, a short-handed Panthers squad was forced to default to Police Polecats.
In the only women game which was played, Bluebird B team defeated Wildcats 1-0.
