Ravens tame Wildcats and move to top
Ravens have moved to the top of the women?s A league standings after a win against Wildcats last Saturday.
Ravens earned an impressive 16 short-corners over the course of the match ? although they only managed to convert two for goals.
Sixteen minutes into play, Megan Troake found the back of the net to take Ravens into the lead, and then she followed up again just before half-time to double it.
Wildcats fought back in the second half, with Chrisanthi Bartley smacking in a goal in open play. But Wildcats were unable to find an equaliser and had to accept the 2-1 loss.
Swallows A team also picked up a 2-0 win over Canaries on the weekend.
Liz Hartley put the finishing touch on a successful short-corner routine in the first half to put Swallows ahead and Karen White followed up late in the second half with an open play goal to put the match away.
The B league table sees Swallows and Bluebirds neck-and-neck at the top with seven points apiece.
Bluebirds picked up three with their 2-0 shutout of Wildcats on Sunday.
Captain Eva Dillas picked up the first goal on a successful short-corner routine after 15 minutes, while Kris Soares put the match out of reach with an open play goal just before the half-time break. Wildcats did manage to earn four short-corner opportunities but failed to capitalise on them.
Swallows meanwhile grabbed a 4-1 victory over Canaries B squad.
All of the goals in this match were from short-corner routines with Swallows hitting the mark on four of nine attempts and Canaries finding success in one of their three opportunities.
Canaries were first on the board, however, as Captain Georgie Drover drove home just two minutes into the match. But after that it was to be almost all about the Swallows.
Captain Lucy Searing successfully put away two short-corners to close the first half of the match. And late in the second period, her team-mates Donna Nicholson and Karen Turner each added a goal to double Swallows? tally.
Ravens B also picked up a 3-0 win over Wildcats last weekend with Katie Dunmore, Donna Douglas and Alex Wheatley each adding a goal toward the victory.
Upstarts are at the top of men?s league with six points after securing a 3-2 victory over the Rebels on Saturday. This was a tightly-contested match with neither team finding the goal until deep into the first half.
Upstarts Phil Trussel finally started the scoring with an open play goal in the 26th minute. Rebels battled back with an equaliser early in the second half, however, as captain Simon Van Der Weg found the right touch on a penalty corner.
But Upstarts hit back with two rapid-fire open play goals within five minutes of each other ? the first from David Kaniaru, which was followed by Trussel?s second goal. Rebels managed to pull back another goal as Andrew Travis successfully converted a short-corner attempt in the 58th minute but they could not catch Upstarts and were forced to accept a loss.
In the other men?s match of the weekend, Panthers put a stop to Chameleons with a 3-2 win.
Chameleon Mark Finnigan opened the scoring with an open play goal in the first four minutes but Panthers battled back immediately to earn a short-corner which was successfully converted by captain Stephen Troake.
Jonathan Whitefield pick up another open play goal for Panthers to take the team to break with a 2-1 lead. Chameleons evened the score early in the second half on a short-corner routine put away by Jonathan Dodd. But the stalemate was not to last as Troake found a winner for Panthers on a short corner routine in 51st minute to close it out.
