Khano injury blow
Khano Smith?s wonder goal may have kept the play-off dream alive for the New England Revolution last weekend, but the Bermudian striker?s own season could be over.
The former Dandy Town attacker bagged the winner as Steve Nicol?s men scored an unlikely 3-2 comeback victory over the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in last weekend?s conference semi-finals.
But having scored his winner ? the third spectacular strike of four goals in his rookie Major League Soccer season ? Smith was involved in a tangle with French World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff and had to be stretchered off.
The diagnosis is bruising under his left knee cap and the team doctor warned Smith he may need to sit out for two weeks ? unfortunately also the same length of time left in the season.
The striker will definitely miss this Sunday?s conference championship clash with Chicago Fire ? and should his team-mates triumph without him ? he would be in a race to get fit for the MLS Cup the following weekend.
?I thought I?d broken it,? said Smith, sounding relatively upbeat despite what could prove to be a frustrating end to his first MLS campaign.
?Youri was in a challenge with another one of our players and just fell on me ? there was nothing intentional about it.
?It was really painful and I thought it was broken until I looked down and saw it wasn?t deformed or anything.
?The doctor said it is just bruising under the kneecap and we have to wait for the bruising to come out ? and he says I should be out for two weeks.?
Smith has had a stop-start first year in the MLS since getting picked up by the Revs on their pre-season tour of the Island.
Although he has started just eight of his 23 games, he has been impressive coming on as a sub and seems to have developed a habit of scoring late, spectacular winners.
His explosive work down the left-hand side will be sorely missed as the MLS season reaches its climax.
?These games are all pretty intense,? said Smith, whose successes this year haven?t gone to his head.
?I must admit I prefer the traditional system of a league and separate cup competition but we know the Americans like their play-offs and we knew this was the system in place from the beginning.
?These games are played at 100 miles per hour, with the ball flying around everywhere ? this is it, this is your season on the line.
?I enjoy them in a way, it?s just like when I was playing in the FA Final for Dandy Town.?
The Revs take on the Fire on Sunday afternoon at the Gillette Stadium ? a ground the soccer side share with Super Bowl champions the New England Patriots ? in the Eastern Conference championship and the winners advance to the MLS Cup at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas on Sunday, November 13, where they will take on the victors from the Western Conference clash between the Colorado Rapids and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
As well as missing Smith, the Revs will have to cope without fellow left-sided midfielder Marshall Leonard (hamstring) ? the man Smith often replaces from the bench.
?We have options, there are a ton of things we can do,? coach Nicol told the Boston Globe.
?Obviously we are thinking about it, but so much can happen between now and Sunday and we don?t want to rush into anything.
?We will take everything into consideration and what we do will depend on players? fitness, who is sharp, who is having a bad time or doing well in training.?
Once the season is over, Smith will return to Bermuda ?until they call me back for pre-season training? and confirmed, ?much as I want to?, that he won?t be available for selection for the Hornets.
