Village no longer Red Devils

North Village Community Club has taken great pains to extricate itself from the Red Devils monicker that has been associated with its sporting teams since 1957.

Shervin Dill, the club president, said last night that the move was made to uplift the image of the club in the wake of the troubling world affairs at present.

"There is nothing good that you can say about a devil and I don't want my kids or anyone else's kids to be called devils," a passionate Dill said.

According to Dill, the nickname was given to Village, who produced some of the finest footballers and teams throughout the 70s and 80s, by the rector at St James' Church when several members turned out in support of the Rev. Canon Thomas Nisbett, resplendent in their red attire.

"He wanted to know what all these red devils were doing there and it caught on from there," Dill recalled.

Now, with a view to attracting interest from corporate Bermuda, among others, Dill is adamant that the club and "Red Devils" move in different directions. "We don't want to be associated with evil - it's as simple as that," he said.

He wants the nickname to revert to "the Rams" which is presently in use with the club's Commercial Division side.
