Logie: ?We need to play much better?
Gus Logie was once again left unhappy with his team after another below-par display that allowed the next generation of Namibian cricketers to get one over on them in Friday?s second one-day game.
Although much of his fury was directed at the opposition for their aggressive way of closing out the innings, he still had a few choice words for his side.
Having seen Namibia smash 388, Bermuda replied with 192 for seven before Logie pulled his players off with 12 overs remaining after Kola Burger sent three-short pitched deliveries past the head of tailend batsman Kevin Hurdle.
But there was no disguising Logie?s disappointment with his team?s overall performance.
?You can?t read too much into it because it was a practice game and we were missing the likes of Saleem (Mukuddem) and Clay Smith, but, yes, it is disappointing to lose like this,? said Logie, whose opposition included five Under-19 players and a 16-year-old opening bowler who went for 19 in six overs while taking the wicket of Curtis Jackson.
?I think we showed again we have a lot to learn and I don?t think the players would say any different.
?We have to be honest with ourselves and we know we need to play better than that if we are to compete.
?But it was important for us to play these matches and we can take a lot from them.
?It gave us a chance to try out some of the younger guys to see how they fared and I think you can learn from any game of cricket.
?I would have hoped for more from some of them but there is no getting away from the fatigue they are suffering and we had to cope with a few injuries as well.
?We need to learn from these experiences and how we can cope better with these sort of matches and use them to work on things we want.
?The aim was to bat first in the first game and see what sort of target we can set and then field first and see what sort of target we can chase but it didn?t quite work out.?
And as for the way in which his side allowed the Namibians to rack up the best part of 400 in less than the allotted overs, Logie was forced to admit his side?s failures again.
?I don?t think we had the firepower to deal with them on this pitch,? he continued. ?Again our fielding wasn?t up to the standard it should have been and the players know that.
?I was pleased to see Kevin Hurdle bowling with a bit of fire but we need to tighten up if we are going to put sides under more pressure.?
His Namibian counterpart Andy Waller, when not talking about the final controversial over, was just the opposite.
?Oh yeah, I?m chuffed for our guys,? he said. ?We have a very young side and I am very pleased with the way they handled themselves out there.
?There were some good performances from a lot of them and I have to mention Floris Marx in particular, he is a great kid and a great cricketer and I was pleased to see him bowl so well out there.?
He also expressed delight in the Burgers who, in less than half an innings, combined to comfortably outscore the entire Bermuda side.
?I asked the senior guys to step things up after they didn?t do so well in the first game and they took responsibility,? he added.
?And Kola?s knock was just exceptional. He normally bats further down the order but once we got through the first ten overs without losing a wicket, we thought we?d give him a go and it just worked perfectly.?
